Next on the list was the coast of Italy. We stayed in a town called Santa Margherita that neighbors Portofino. The first day we took the train to Cinque Terre, which is an group of five small villages along the coast that are all connected via walkways or trails along in the cliffs. My mom and dad spent a week in this area a few years back, and she made him hike ALL the paths. This time around he decided we were only going to do the easy ones, since it took them from about 8am to 6pm to make it through all of the villages. Another gorgeous day; not too hot, not too cold, and sunny. We hiked between three of the towns and stopped to eat lunch in the third. We ate at a little outdoor cafĂ©, and I ordered bruschetta and dad ordered a panini. When our food came out, we both received….pizzas. Mine had tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on top, and his just had pesto. We were wondering what the difference between our meals and the pizzas on the menu was? We then took a train back to the first town so we could take a boat to the fifth town. Dad wanted me to see the towns from the water since you can’t get a good perspective of them when you’re actually in them.
That night we took the bus over the Portofino for dinner. The road to the town is very narrow, again built into a cliff above the ocean. There are some turns that are too narro
w for two cars, let alone a bus and a car. When making the turns, the bus simply flashed his lights to alert drivers that it was coming. I’m not sure how many accidents happen on this road each year, but I’d definitely want to be in the bus and NOT the car. Portofino is a tiny village that sits in a cove and has about 10 streets total. It looks exactly like the Portofino resort at Universal Studios in Orlando. The town was deserted the night we were there, and we had a nice quiet dinner accompanied by a piano player at one of the hotels. The hotel will close for the season in a week and not open again until Easter.
