Friday night as we were walking home from the river, we stumbled across a place that advertised live Hungarian music and international cuisine, so after going home and refreshing, we headed there for dinner. We should have known what we were in for based on the name of the restaurant, “Alcatraz”. This place was a full out Alcatraz themed restaurant (as in the prison in San Francisco Bay) compete with prison bars and an Al Capone wax figure. The international cuisine was hamburgers and hot dogs (and chili for me!) and that Hungarian music—the Hungarian version of Britney Spears, covering all American songs. Our favorite was when she sang Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, but because she couldn’t pronounce the “th” sound, it came out more like “Triller”. It was hilarious. The next day my tour salesman (see Saturday in Budapest) told us in his broken English that that’s where the “girls in short skirts and muscle men in tight shirts” go. Also that there are lots of drugs there, like cocaine and ecstasy. This explains the fascination of the entire bar staring deeply at the bartender juggling flaming bottles of liquor.Picture: All of us behind the bars at Alcatraz.
