Road Trip (Belgian Waffles & Mannequin Pis)

Our first stop was Brussels, Belgium. We parked the Purple Panda (I obviously lost the argument) and realized coming into the parking garage we somehow lost the other car. Molly, Kyle and I walked around the garage for awhile looking for the other car, and when we couldn’t find it, we went outside the garage where we saw the other car parked—but no people inside! So we went BACK inside the garage and heard people yelling our names….then we yelled their names…and by sound of voice the two groups met up. We jokingly argued for a bit about who lost who, then went out to explore Brussels. It was a rainy and cold day, but Brussels was still a pretty city. At this point, all European cities are kind of starting to look the same but there is one unique thing about Brussels--the Mannequin Pis.

The Mannequin Pis is a fountain statue of a little boy peeing. Tradition states that a long time ago a fire started and threatened to burn the city down, but this little boy peed on the fire which saved Brussels from a fiery demise. Today the city council dresses the statue in different outfits for occasions throughout the year. We saw him in a wetsuit holding some sort of surfboard…..maybe they were promoting tourism to Australia?

Near the statue we tried out official Belgian waffles, and they were nothing like in the States. The actual waffle was kind of crunchy and extremely sweet and not all that appealing in my opinion. But I got toppings of chocolate syrup and bananas and that part was fabulous. I wish I would have just gotten the toppings and not the actual waffle.

We walked around a little more, got sick of the rain, and headed back to the cars. It was quite the adventure to get out of the city, but we eventually found our way and headed north to Bruges.
