Living in Squalor (at least the scent of it)

The seven of us that went to Morocco were split into three hotel rooms. These hotel rooms were all decorated in the traditional Moroccan style with bright colors on the walls, embellished linens on the beds, and Arabic architectural details. It was a beautiful place. But as Tracy climbed the stairs and got closer to our hotel room, we noticed a weird smell. Open the doors to our room, and it was an overwhelming rush of a mixture of trash that had been sitting in the garbage for a few weeks and raw sewage that had been sitting in the sun for a week. Open the doors to the bathroom, and the scent went from overwhelming to all-encompassing. There wasn’t a clear source to the stench, and we tried to roll with the punches and just deal with it. There was a can of air freshener, which I think we used entirely in 48 hours. The room’s scent became a mixture of rotting trash, sewage, and peonies. By night three we moved into a different room.
