Remember my friend Cas, the one that ate the whole bowl of lamb brains? While strolling through the souks, he saw a cage full of tiny turtles and decided he wanted one. We the vendor, Mustafa, who spoke perfect English and who let us play with his turtles. Bad idea, Cas fell even more deeply in love with the idea of buying a turtle. We brainstormed with Mustafa for about a half hour on how Cas could smuggle the turtle back to London. Mustafa even went so far as to go to another stall to get a small box that could house the turtle and some lettuce. No one was sure what the fine was for smuggling live amphibians from Africa to Europe, but Cas decided it was worth it. He bought the turtle for 120 Dhs, and decided he would put the turtle in his pocket when passing through security.
He was on the Sunday flight, so the first thing I did when I got back to London on Monday was see if the turtle made it through both Morocco’s and England’s customs and immigration. Cas got through without anyone suspecting him of being a smuggler and I am happy to report that Cas and his new pet, Artie from Africa, are happily living two floors below me. Cas’ main concern: “If we can get sick from drinking the water in Morocco, do you think Artie will get sick from drinking the water in London?”
