After the ceremony we walked over the center of Vienna, the Stephensplatz, to make reservations at a nice Italian place where we would have dinner with Molly M. and her family later that night. I had eaten there the last time I was in Vienna in 2006 and remembered it, so I requested we celebrate my graduation there and Molly was all for it. After walking around for a little bit, we headed home on the UBahn and I relaxed and packed the rest of the afternoon.
That night we met Molly, her mom, and her grandparents at the restaurant and had an awesome dinner. After eating weinerschintzel and potato salad for two months it was nice to have something different. We then walked Molly’s grandparents to the taxi stand a block or so away so they could catch a cab back to the hotel, and we went to meet some people from Webster (old teachers, the business school dean, etc) in a plaza in front of their hotel to watch the final World Cup match between Spain and the Netherlands. Stephensplatz has numerous sidewalk cafes, and just like in Dubrovnik they all had large plasma tvs broadcasting the game with hoards of people watching at each. We found our group, who had been staked out since 4:00pm (it was now 8:00pm) and had the best seats in the house (although not enough seats for everyone…about half our group had to stand). It was fun to watch the game with some of our professors and the director from the Netherlands, although much to my dismay they ended up losing to Spain. People in Austria seemed to be rooting for Spain, though, because when they won the city went nuts!
