“Anyone with normal physical ability should be able to do this hike.”

The final day of our tour started with a hike in the cliffs above the lake. The tour description described the hike as one that any person of reasonable physical ability should be able to handle, but I strongly disagree. The2.5 hour hike was all steep inclines, both uphill and downhill, and it was about 100 degrees and very humid. Kung, the boat driver K and Big accompanied us on the hike, and Big was so excited to get out of the village and show us around his stomping ground. He had a machete with him (could you imagine a 12 year old kid from the States having his own machete?) and started chopping things down along our hike. All of a sudden he presented Molly, Kung and I with our very own bamboo walking sticks which were very helpful due to the lack of railings on the steepest slopes. We got a few good views looking down on the lake from above, but most of the hike was through thick jungle and all you could see was vegetation. We saw a hundred year old, massive Baynon tree, a cave in which lived a python (we didn’t actually see the python), a beetle the size of a small bird whose wing broke and who fell down on me from the treetops, and Molly saw the floor of the jungle after she slid down one of the hills. The trail dumped us out into the part of the lake that we had toured the day prior, and our long-tail boat was waiting to take us back to the village where we would have lunch then head back to the mainland and Kata Beach.

Pictures: So sweaty on the hike; Big making us walking sticks.
